Item description
This is an original antique brass apothecary mortar and pestle, dating to approximately the mid-late 19th century.
Mortars of this form were used by pharmacists, apothecaries, and physicians to grind medicinal compounds, herbs, and powders prior to modern pharmaceutical manufacturing. The heavy brass construction, lathe-turned form, and hand-finished pestle are consistent with 19th-century European or American apothecary production.
Notable details:
Solid brass / bronze alloy construction
Classic bell-form mortar with flared base
Matching pestle with correct wear and age
Hand-turned concentric tool marks visible throughout
Natural, undisturbed patina from age and use
This example shows honest wear from actual use, not modern distressing. The interior grinding surface and pestle both exhibit appropriate smoothing and contact marks expected of period pharmacy tools.
These antique mortars are increasingly sought after by:
Medical and pharmaceutical collectors
Apothecary and scientific instrument collectors
Interior designers (library, study, kitchen display)
Herbalists and historic reenactors
? Condition: original, unpolished, structurally sound
? Era: circa 1800s
?? Material: solid brass / bronze alloy
? Guaranteed antique
A strong display piece with genuine historical character.
