This was my second 2011 Macbook Pro that I rebuilt from parts. The basic laptop that I started with powered on but was missing a hard drive. I have tried several times in the past, both via PC and via another Mac, to make a bootable DVD or USB drive for Lion. It never works the first few times, even though the Lion image came directly FROM APPLE.
This time, I decided to just buy a recycled basic internal SATA drive with the original 2011 OS X version pre-installed. Macbook immediately booted up with 100% functionality, and I was able to update to El Capitan and then High Sierra (the official maxed version for 2011 Macbooks) without any issues.
Excellent product, will order again if I get another 2010-2012 machine to rebuild.
