Item description

This is a beautiful women's Ghanaian Traditional Slipper. Ahenema is the local name for this Traditional Ghanaian women’s pair of Slippers. It is a local sandal usually used by chiefs, queens, elderly people in the society and the rich or well-to-do in society. It is the royal footwear of the Akan and symbolizes pure elegance and class. It is worn during traditional events like festivals, funerals, marriage ceremonies and also worn for church functions in modern times. Lately, the Ahenema has become a general fashion item such that anyone who can afford it can buy and use it just like the traditional Kente cloth. History explains that during the olden days, when these sandals were made for Chiefs, it was supposed to be named after the King but since the name of the King was not supposed to be mentioned in vain, they rather named the sandals after the children of the Kings and hence the name Ahenema which translates as "The King’s Children". Ahenema is in two (2) main types: “Asansan Tuo” which has a curved shape and “Atine” which has a practically straight shape and worn by Chiefs. The sole of an Ahenema slipper is shaped into the letter 8 and this is done basically for stability during walking. Makers of the Ahenema in the past used skins like Tromoo for the sole of the Ahenema and goat skin for the inner sole. The upper part of the Ahenema with its design, determine the name given to it. **ALL SIZES ARE AVAILABLE.
