COVER: A STYLE OF HER OWN: MARTINA NAVRATILOVA. Cover: Photo by Melchior DiGiacomo.
TOP OF THE WEEK [Major Top Stories]:
MARTINA: A STYLE OF HER OWN: Muscles taut and stretched to the limit, reigning Wimbledon champion
Martina Navratilova positively ripples with barely harnessed power. While other female athletes struggle
to develop skills not always included in the genetic package, the 25-year-old Czech defector is a born
athlete. But Navratilova's remarkable feats are set against a background of sudden collapses in major
matches and questions about her consistency will haunt her this week, when she begins her quest for the
U.S. Open trophy that she has never won. Page 44.
PIPELINE POLITICS: After months of bitter debate, the Reagan administration last week took direct action
against the Soviet natural-gas pipeline to Western Europe-and the results were hardly impressive. The
administration was defied by its allies, taken to court by an American company and forced to watch
helplessly as U.S. parts were delivered to the Soviets for use in the pipeline's construction. Page 16.
THE MARINES GO IN: Amid the tumult of Beirut, U.S. Marines stepped ashore to watch over the evacuation
of the PLO. Most of the gunmen left peacefully in a crescendo of celebratory rifle fire and grenade bursts.
But Bashir Gemayel's election as Lebanon's next president raised fears that renewed Christian-Muslim
warfare might replace PLO violence. Page 30.
THE BABY KILLERS: Until recently, scientists regarded infanticide as a grisly aberration unworthy of serious
study. Now biologists are discovering that baby killing is widespread throughout the animal kingdom-and
among human beings as well. Some researchers believe infanticide may represent an age-old evolutionary
adaptation. Page 78.
INSIDE THE NSA: What U.S. agency needs more space than any but the Pentagon, yet is so secret many
Americans don't even know it exists? The National Security Agency, America's eavesdropper on the world. A
new book takes the first detailed look at the NSA. Page 20.
