Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) - 50 Seeds
Features:
Heirloom
Non-GMO
American Grown Seeds
Biennial
USDA Zones: 4-9
Description:
Known for its soft, fuzzy, pale leaves and tall yellow flower spikes, Mullein is a striking wild plant with renowned healing qualities. This adaptable biennial plant is commonly found in open fields, along roadsides, and in disturbed areas. A member of the Scrophulariaceae family, Mullein can grow up to seven feet tall in ideal conditions, producing a rosette of large, light green, velvety leaves in its first year, followed by towering spikes of tightly packed yellow flowers in its second year. Blooming throughout the summer, it develops seed pods in the fall before dying off after seed dispersal. The leaves and flowers can be collected for both fresh and dried uses, often employed in traditional remedies.
Growing Instructions:
Mullein seeds require a cold period to break dormancy. For best results, direct sow seeds outdoors in the fall for natural spring germination, or start them indoors after a 4-6 week cold stratification. The seeds require light to germinate, so surface sow them 8-12 inches apart, pressing lightly to settle into the soil. After frost danger has passed, transplant any indoor seedlings outdoors, thinning them to 20-24 inches apart. Mullein thrives in well-draining soil with full sunlight and is well-suited for wild gardens and naturalized settings.
