Item description

FRANCIS PARKMAN: Heroic Historian; A Biography By Mason Wade New York: The Viking Press, 1942. First edition, first printing. Contains publisher's first printing statement: " First published in November 1942 by The Viking Press". Enhanced with eight striking illustrations on black-and-white plates and with detailed map endpapers. Through significant research in America and in Canada, in addition to drawing upon previously undiscovered journals, Wade presents the first full account of Parkman's life and works. Parkman, who came from a Puritan Bostonian background, fought Indians, was a boy pioneer on the Oregon Trail, took many trips through the wilderness in expeditions to the West, gave a detailed account of frontier life, recorded the difficulties with the British and French in securing American Independence, went to Harvard and remained a scholar his whole life, and had a passion for Heroes. A fascinating biography of an incredible life, with a first-hand look at American history. Very nearly fine in burgundy linen with gilt embossed titles to the front cover ant to the spine; in a very good plus dust jacket with minor shallow chipping to the upper edge of the front panel and upper spine edge, mild fading to the spine panel and tiny nicks to the upper corner tips; original $4.50 price still intact to the front inner flap. Wonderful historical biography in the original high quality first edition! Thick Octavo; 466 pages; bibliographical note; index.
