Item description
The Legend of Jubal
and Other Poems Old and New
The Spanish Gypsy
by George Eliot
John W. Lovell Company, New York, 1892
George Eliot was born Mary Ann Evans in Warwickshire on November 22nd, 1819.
"The Legend of Jubal" is her expansion and mythologization of the Biblical character Jubal, descendant of Cain, who was "the father of all who handle the harp and organ" (Gen. 4:20-21).
Although the Biblical account tells us no more about Jubal, Eliot's poem builds neo-Romantic mythos which serves as a parable of the value of humanity and imagination. The beautiful work intends to affirm the role of both creativity and nature in building an artistic world redeemed by the deeds of a loving human fellowship.
