Item description
Antique Stereoscope Stereoscopic Stereoview Card
1895 Milk Punches Pigs Strohmeyer
Stereoscopic cards, popularized in the 19th century, offered a 3D viewing experience. They featured two slightly different images, mimicking how human eyes perceive depth. In 1838, Charles Wheatstone invented the stereoscope, a viewer that merged these images. Oliver Wendell Holmes improved the concept in 1859, creating handheld stereoscopes and introducing mass production. These cards depicted scenes from around the world and became a Victorian-era craze. They remained popular through the early 20th century, evolving into educational tools and entertainment. Though their popularity waned with technological advancements, stereoscopic techniques laid the foundation for modern 3D imaging and virtual reality experiences.
Measures about 7" long by 3-1/2" wide wide
Pre-owned, good condition, may be some age toning and signs of normal usage please view photos, a little damage on this card
