This
early stoneware jug was made skillfully by a potter on
a potter's wheel. This
is a wonderful,
clean,
antique
beehive jug
with a dark brown glaze.
I
don't know exactly when this jug was made but given its style, Albany
Slip Glaze and stoneware color and impurities places it
somewhere in the early to mid 1800's.
?Slip
Glaze? is the potters? term for
a glaze made by clay mixed with water. High
in iron, Albany Slip produced a deep
brown color as seen on this jug. It was common on earthenware,
stoneware and salt-glaze pottery throughout
the 19th century.
This
jug is just beautiful
and it holds a gallon plus.
It is primitive and rustic and shows its age.
You can see and feel where the potter applied
pressure to form the handle with his fingers. The surface of the
jug also has ridges, left by the potter's fingers when he turned
it on the wheel. This piece would make a great addition to any
collection of stoneware, folk art, or Americana, due to its age
and condition. There are some chips on the bottom and sides of the
jug, but NOTHING is cracked through the thick sides. It
is also worth noting that this jug has thick walls; it weighs 5.5
pounds.
Approx.
Measurements:
10.25"
tall x 7"
wide at the handle and 6 " in diameter
at the
base.
There is a 1" hole in the top.
This
great jug would be an excellent addition to any collection and will
display very well. They are also great for decorating.
Condition:
Pre
Owned. The
condition is very good, especially
considering its age.
As shown
in the last photo,
use over the years have
slightly
worn the glaze down
on the
edges of the handle. There
are surface and firing imperfections as expected with a piece of
stoneware that was made so long ago. There are some chips on
the sides of
the jug, NOTHING is cracked through the thick sides.
