While constructing a new underground subway, workers discover an ancient Martian spaceship. The drill operator is driven off the spaceship he is trying to penetrate, and is sent head-spinning in a whirlwind of paper and dust with a sudden burst of energy from the spaceship. Quatermass (played this time by Keir) investigates and discovers dead insect men in the hull. This, however, is no ancient relic -- the ship is alive, exuding deadly electricity, heat rays and telepathy. Through an energy force contained in the ship, Quatermass learns that the Martians landed at the dawn of Earth's time in search of slaves and speeded up the process of evolution by advancing the apes to men before dying out. Authors of 'Chariot of the Gods' and 'Ancient Aliens' must have seen this movie and ran with the ideas. Writer Nigel Kneale's speculations are truly exciting and perhaps the first of it's kind. For example, significant occult beliefs are explained by reference to the satanic-looking Martians who, it is also suggested, are the sources of much of man's culture as well as his genetic development. For me this is the best British sci-fi movie ever made and rivals '2001: a Space Odyssey' with its implications and spectacular ending of the sudden burst of energy from the spaceship which projects huge Martians across the skies of London. Comes in it's original hard, black plastic clamshell with liner notes on the inside of the cover sleeve that you can delicately pull out.
