TOP OF THE WEEK:
AMNESTY FOR NIXON? Amnesty for One and All: Gerald Ford stunned the nation by granting a "full, free and absolute pardon" to Richard Nixon. That solved most of Nixon's mounting legal problems, but it left a gnawing question: had justice been done? Ford, meanwhile, was putting the final touches on a policy of limited amnesty for Vietnam era deserters and draft evaders. From reports by Newsweek's Washington bureau, Senior Editor Larry Martz tells the story of Nixon's pardon, while General Editor Richard M. Smith tells what "earned reentry" will mean for other recipients of amnesty. (Cover photo by Dennis Brack -- Black Star.)
INFLATION FIGHTERS: It had never happened before in America. The leading economists were advising the President on how to cope with inflation -- in full view of a national television audience. The meeting produced a surprising consensus and helped prompt a sharp rally on Wall Street. With files from Rich Thomas, David Pauly wrote the story.
THE NEW ECONOMICS: Economics seems to be replacing the cold war as the hub of Western foreign policy. With files from Milan J. Kubic and Scott Sullivan, Milton R. Benjamin chronicles the emergence of West Germany as Italy's new godfather. And Tom Mathews assesses inflation's impact on the democracies.
NEW SEASONS: The tried if not the true is coming in the new TV and theater seasons. On Broadway, Arthur Cooper reports, it's revivals and British. ers, and the regional theaters flex their muscles (page 89). The tube, says Harry F. Waters, is spinfling off warm families, tough lady cops, coobcat ethnics and wise apes (page 58).
BATTLE STATIONS: For a century, foreign yachts have challenged for the AMERICA'S CUP, and for a century, they have sailed away emptyhanded. This week, Australia's Southern Cross gets its turn, and the pressure is on the defender Courageous. Sports editor Pete Axthelm reports from Newport, R.I.
