Canby Thornless Mid Season Red Raspberry
Canby raspberries are large, firm, and have excellent flavor. This thornless variety is easy to pick, and excellent for fresh use or freezing. Canes are vigorous and can support support the heavy yield of berries. A good choice from sea level to 7,500 feet elevation in USDA zones 4-8.
Planting raspberries from rootstock is the easiest and most economical way to establish your own raspberry patch. 16 ounces will plant a row 40 foot in length. You are buying rootstock. Rootstock produces more canes than bare root raspberry canes at less than half of the cost. This is the preferred method for raspberry farmers because of the lower cost and the ease of planting. You can expect 48-72 new canes to grow quickly from 16 oz. of rootstock the first year. All it takes is a little patience and remembering to water regularly. And since your rootstock is inspected to be free of diseases and viruses, your raspberry patch should last over 15 years with proper care.
If your soil is too wet or cold to till, you can get a head start on the season...the raspberry roots can be planted in containers 1/2-1 inch deep to root out before they are planted in their permanent location. Place the containers in a sunny warm location. Usually in about 3 months after you planted the containers, they are ready to plant in the permanent garden area. Detailed planting/pruning instructions will come with rootstock.
Will produce berries next spring. The second photo shows 8 ounces of rootstock. The third photo shows raspberry canes in the fall grown from rootstock planted in the spring.
