Shu Embroidery · A Dual-Sided Masterpiece
Shu Embroidery, also known as "Chuan Xiu," is a traditional craft centered in the Chengdu Plain of Sichuan Province, with a history of over 3,000 years. In 2006, it was inscribed on China's first National Intangible Cultural Heritage list.Known for its crisp composition, meticulous stitches, and smooth, lustrous surfaces, Shu Embroidery boasts 132 distinct stitch types and 80 unique brocade techniques.
This circular ornament features the most demanding and revered Shu Embroidery technique: double-sided embroidery. This means the front and back of the piece both display complete and exquisite patterns. It requires the embroiderer to plan with extreme precision from the very beginning, working on an extremely thin silk base to ensure the two sides do not interfere with each other.Creating a double-sided piece often takes two to three times longer than a single-sided one. Each double-sided embroidery is the culmination of an artisan's years of skill and dedication.
Artisan Craftsmanship · An Elegant Desk Companion
The design of this piece reflects the thoughtful principles of Eastern aesthetics. The circular embroidery symbolizes completeness, harmony, and perfection in traditional Chinese culture. On the fine silk, the threads flow with elegant colors, bringing the pattern to life.
The natural walnut wood frame and base, with their warm tones and fine grain, provide a perfect complement to the delicate embroidery. Walnut wood is valued for its durability and resistance to warping, creating a beautiful contrast of strength and softness.
The glass panel effectively protects the embroidery from dust, moisture, and daily contact, ensuring this work of art can be enjoyed for years to come.
The Making Process · Five Days of Dedication
Creating a fine double-sided Shu embroidery ornament involves a complex series of handcraft steps:
Step 1 — Design Tracing — The artisan selects an auspicious pattern and precisely traces it onto the fine silk base.
Step 2 — Thread Selection Splitting — Dozens of shades of natural mulberry silk thread are chosen based on the pattern's color needs, and split to the required fineness—sometimes as fine as a strand of hair—to achieve delicate color gradations.
Step 3 — Double-Sided Embroidery — The embroiderer works on the frame, stitching both the front and the back simultaneously, skillfully concealing all thread ends and knots within the silk layers. Every stitch during those five days represents focus and patience.
Step 4 — Mounting Framing — The finished embroidery is carefully stretched, flattened, and mounted into the walnut wood frame and base, then protected with a glass panel.
Step 5 — Quality Check Packaging — Each finished piece undergoes a rigorous quality inspection before being placed into a custom gift box, ensuring it arrives in perfect condition.
