Item description
These are original Civil War-era blank identification discs, commonly referred to as sutler stock, dating to approximately 1861-1870.
During the Civil War, soldiers frequently purchased privately made identification tags from sutlers or local craftsmen. Many were sold blank, intended to be hand-engraved with the soldier's name, unit, or hometown. A significant number were never engraved and survive today as unused examples.
This grouping includes:
One oval brass identification disc with patriotic eagle and flag motif
One shield-form eagle identification disc, also unengraved
Both pieces show:
Correct period brass alloy
Hand-struck or early die-stamped manufacture
Natural age patina and honest surface wear
Original suspension holes as made
These are not modern reproductions and not later GAR or commemorative pieces. The style, construction, and wear are fully consistent with known Civil War-era sutler blanks.
Unengraved examples are increasingly scarce, as many were either personalized or lost in the field. Blank discs like these are highly sought after by:
Civil War collectors
Relic hunters
Sutler historians
Reenactors seeking authentic period examples
Museums and educational displays
A strong, original pair with excellent display appeal.
? Approximate size: standard Civil War ID disc dimensions
? Condition: original, uncleaned, as found
? Guaranteed period original
