Knickerbocker's New York by Washington Irving The Stratford Edition, 1880 Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons "A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty by Diedrich Knickerbocker" The Author's Revised Edition complete in One Volume Hardbound in red cloth titled in gilt and decorated in embossed black detailing Diedrich Knickerbocker was a fictional character created by Washington Irving. In 1809 Irving published ads concerning the whereabouts of the Dutch historian and his purported manuscript, A History of New York, which was a chronicle of the city's 50 years under Dutch rule in the 1600's that played fast and loose with the facts. This book propelled Irving to the heights of literary stardom.
