She is depicted as a lioness. She was seen as the protector of the pharaohs and led them in warfare. Upon death, Sekhmet continued to protect them, bearing them to the afterlife. Sekhmet, which means strong, was always represented as a woman with the head of a lioness or in the form of a lady and the head of a lioness sitting on the throne that is adorned with the sign of the unification of northern and southern Egypt and holding in her hand the key to life the ankh, above her head the sun disk and the cobra snake. The center of her worship was in Memphis, and she was considered the wife of Ptah and the mother of Nefertum, the god of the lotus, as they represented the Memphis triad (Ptah Sekhmet and their son Nefertum).
