Item description
MURDER IN THE MADHOUSE
by Jonathan Latimer
New York: Triangle Books, (1940).
Reprint.
"Triangle Books edition published March 1940" statement to the copyright page.
Originally published by The Crime Club/Doubleday Doran in 1935.
This
early Triangle edition employs the same evocative dust jacket art by Walter Frame as was used for the The Crime Club first edition.
The first of five mysteries featuring private investigator William Crane, three of which were adapted to major films starring Preston Foster.
Latimer was a highly regarded mystery author and prolific screenwriter for such timeless films as 'The Glass Key', 'The Big Clock', Topper Returns', and etc.
A one-inch wide band of mild white paper residue across the lower rear cover, slight age-toning to the end-papers and tanning to the pages as usual, else sturdy and about very good in red linen boards with black embossed vignette crime scene illustration by Frame mimicked from the jacket art, and with reverse red titles to the spine, upper page edges pale red, sewn binding; in a very good dust jacket with front panel stylized art by Walter Frame, with small chips and tears to the upper and lower spine ends, rubbing, wear and surface nicks to the flap folds and spine joints; original code '0039' printed to the front inner flap, and 'No. 149' printed to the rear inner flap.
Rather elusive Triangle edition, especially in dust jacket.
