Item description
This listing is for a healthy, beautiful, 4-6 feet tall Red Maple Native Tree. This tree is easy to grow, generally growing 40-60 ft tall and wide. OUTSTANDING FEATURES:
Provides amazing yellow to red fall color and brings color to your landscape all year-round. Green stems turn red in winter, new leaves are red-tinged, turning to green. Fall color is deep red or yellow. Flowers are red or yellow as well.
Produces red (sometimes yellow) clusters of small flowers winter to spring.
Features, medium to dark green leaves 2–6 inches in length with 3 or 5 lobes and sinuses that are irregularly toothed.
Yields twin seeds bound at their tips to long drooping stems. The seeds ripen in late spring and have wings that are up to 1 inch in length.
Can grow in a round, oval, upright or erect shape.
The red maple grows in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, silty loam, sandy, well-drained and clay soils. It prefers wet soil conditions but has a slight tolerance to drought.
Full sun is the ideal condition for this tree, therefore it should get at least six hours of direct, sunlight each day.
This tree grows at a medium to fast rate, with growth of anywhere from 13 inches to more than 24 inches per year.
The fruits (samaras) provide food enjoyed by squirrels and many other rodents. Deer and rabbits eat the tender leaves and shoots of red maples.
The Red Maple has history and many claims to fame. It has the greatest north–south range of any tree species living entirely in the eastern forests (Newfoundland to southern Florida). It is also the state tree of Rhode Island. In the 1890s, a Rhode Island school commissioner gave students a list of trees and asked them to vote on their favorite. Red Maple won, but it was not officially adopted as the state tree until 1964—making Rhode Island one of last states in the nation to proclaim its tree.
The nation's largest Red Maple grows far to the south of Rhode Island in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. This tree was declared champion in 1997 by American Forests and is listed in the National Register of Big Trees as being 141 feet tall and just over 7 feet in diameter at 4 feet above ground.
Cold hardy to zones 3-9. Keep soil moist until completely established, then water regularly as needed. Fertilize in spring just before new growth begins. We will wrap the roots and soil with wet paper towels, seal in a plastic bag, and ship via USPS Priority mail. When you get the plant put it in healthy soil and water everyday until it looks happy and green.
