Contains publisher's "first printing" statement to the copyright page, and "1961" printed to the title page, and first state dust jacket with cellophane insert to die-cut circle in front panel.
McCuller's final novel, set in small-town Georgia on the eve of
court-ordered integration.

Small faint tan stain to outer lower page edges, light rubbing to lower shelf-edges, else very good plus in orange linen with gilt embossed titles to a circular black panel to the front cover and with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a very good plus first issue dust jacket with peek-a-boo cellaphane to a die-cut circle to the front panel, two very short tears to the lower die-cut edge, rub-wear to the rear flap fold, and tiny surface nicks and crimps to the upper and lower spine edges and corner tips; original printed $4.00 price still intact to the front inner flap.
