Item description
CENTENNIAL CARAVAN 1847-1947
edited by D. James Cannon
[Salt Lake City, UT]: [LDS] Publications Committee, (1948).
First edition.
A vintage book chronicling the Centennial Reenactment of the original 1847 Mormon Trek from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah. Using automobiles instead of covered wagons this time around, 148 individuals (143 men, 3 women and 2 boys - same as the original) covered the trail that their ancestors did a century before. Each participant had a direct ancestor in the original 1847 caravan. Another modern update was that the trip was made in just one week (July 14-21, 1947) instead of the original four months. The trekkers' cars had canvas covered wagon tops mounted on them, they ate game meat along the way, and the cars camped in a traditional circle with their "wagons" at night. There are biographies and photos of each trek participant, several dozen illustrations from photographs taken during the reenactment, a day-by-day diary of the trip, plus a play "Acts and Epistles" that dramatizes the original 1847 trek. A fascinating book of a modern historic event - and in really great condition.
Maroon boards with gilt-stamped titles to front and spine.
Front endpaper decorated with map of journey's trail.
Octavo; size is 6-3/16" X 9-1/8"; 207 pages
