Item description
THE YOKE OF LIFE
By Frederick Philip Grove
Toronto: The Macmillan Company of Canada Limited at St. Martin's House, 1930.
First edition, first printing.
Grove, author of OVER PRAIRIE TRAILS, and SEARCH FOR AMERICA, moved from Sweden to Canada in 1892 to seek a new life.
From his personal experiences in the early settlement days of Canada and his many years as a prairie school teacher, he draws real-life historical facts and culture for this pioneer-life novel.
Len Sterner is featured as a young man experiencing life in lumber camps, pioneer dance halls saloons, tough times in new settlements, and more.
Upper corners somewhat bumped, rear inner hinge slightly cracked, still sound and sturdy, else very good in textured sky-blue boards with gilt embossed titles to the front cover and to the spine; in an about very good slightly edge-chipped dust jacket with edge tears, a slightly age-toned spine panel, and fading to the perimeters of rear panel; original $2.00 price still intact to the front inner flap.
Wonderful historical novel in the original first edition.
Octavo; 354 pages; note on 'localisms' used in the text.
