The Bread of Deceit (author not stated) Philadelphia: John C. illegible [could be Clark], 1835. Second American edition. Condition is good to very good: bluish-green boards with half cloth binding on spine having gilt titles, boards worn on corners and stained, back cover cracked at hinge but holding, significant wear on spine with missing pieces, large stain on front free endpaper, wear along edges of boards; pages age-toned, have staining and foxing, endpapers split at hinge, back free endpaper loose, else most pages reasonably tight. Inside front cover has a glued-in bookplate for S. Weir Newmayer, M.D. (1877-1967) in Philadelphia. He authored nearly a dozen medical-related books in the early 20th century, including The Human Body and Its Care (1928) and Medical and Sanitary Inspection of Schools (1924). Has 144 pages. Size is 5-1/2" by 3-1/2". A book on moral instruction from the early 19th century, consisting of anecdotes about various people. As usual, this involves temperance, chastity, prayer and scripture reading. The book title is derived from Proverbs 20:17 in the Bible: "Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel."
