The Hydrographic Office of the U.S. Navy was established as a separate office in 1866 and continued as such until 1949. Each of these beautifully colored and detailed high-quality chromolithographs from watercolor paintings, depict specific cloud types over a body of water, usually near a shore, and most include sailing vessels. No motorized boats nor motorized/engine ships are depicted. To the left margin of each captioned art plate is a description of the particular cloud type, beneath a U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office blue seal. A well-preserved, scarce publication with impressive art plates. Slight rubbing to the shelf-edges and corner tips, mild small surface nick to front cover, else very good plus in sturdy coated burgundy binding cloth over brown-burgundy mottle-patterned thick-card wraps.
