Description
A charming and well-executed Italian porcelain figurine in the celebrated Capodimonte tradition, bearing the classic blue underglaze Crown over N mark on the base ? the iconic symbol of Neapolitan porcelain craft. The piece depicts an elegant young lady in 18th-century Rococo costume, typical of the fete galante pastoral scenes that have characterised Capodimonte-style production since the Royal Factory of Naples first popularised the style in the mid-1700s.
The figure stands in a graceful, slightly turned pose on a scrolled rocaille base with gilt cartouche highlights ? one of the hallmarks of the Capodimonte decorative vocabulary. She holds a small lute or mandolin at her side, its strings and soundboard delicately rendered in warm golden-brown tones. Her costume is finely painted: a full-skirted gown in teal/turquoise-blue with a black-and-white striped corset bodice laced with dark ribbon, over a soft pink-lavender petticoat with a white frilled hem and a small silk-bow at the waist. Her short sleeves are trimmed with white lace cuffs. On her head she wears a matching teal bonnet adorned with pink flower clusters and a white feather, with auburn hair falling softly to her shoulders.
The painting is confident and detailed throughout ? careful tonal shading on the dress panels, naturalistic flesh tones on the face with red lips, arched brows and gently downcast eyes, and restrained gilt accents on the base. The overall effect is one of delicate elegance, very much in keeping with the finest examples of mid-20th-century Italian Capodimonte production.
About the Capodimonte tradition
The Capodimonte porcelain tradition originated at the Royal Factory established by King Charles VII of Naples in 1743. The famous Crown over N mark ? the "N" standing for Naples (Napoli) ? was introduced in 1771 and became the enduring symbol of this tradition. The mark was never trademark-protected, and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries numerous high-quality Italian porcelain studios continued to use it, producing figurines in the Rococo Revival style that found a wide and enthusiastic collector market across Europe and beyond. Pieces bearing this mark from the mid-20th-century Italian studios are genuine collectibles in their own right, sought by lovers of Italian decorative porcelain worldwide.
Maker's mark detail
The base bears a blue underglaze Crown over N stamp ? the classic Capodimonte/Neapolitan mark ? accompanied by a small asterisk or flower device to one side. The mark is applied underglaze (beneath the glaze surface), consistent with authentic Italian workshop production of the mid-20th century. One drainage hole is present on the flat oval base underside.
Condition notes
The figurine is in good overall vintage condition. Specific points to note:
Chip/damage to the hat feather or trim at the rear of the bonnet ? a small section of the white feather decoration is missing or broken
Some yellowing/discolouration to the flower trim on the bonnet
Minor rubbing to gilt highlights on the base scrollwork, consistent with age and display use
Light surface dust in recessed areas
No chips, cracks or breaks observed on the main figure, dress, or mandolin
Face painting clean and fully intact; body colours vivid and well-preserved
Please examine all photographs carefully before purchasing. Sold as seen.
Collecting context display
Capodimonte-style figurines of this quality and period enjoy strong, consistent collector interest across the UK, Italy, and internationally. This piece would display beautifully on a mantelpiece, in a glass cabinet, or as part of a wider collection of Italian decorative porcelain. It appeals equally to collectors of Rococo Revival ceramics, fans of Italian porcelain, and those who appreciate finely painted figurative ware from the golden age of mid-century European studio production.
Postage packaging
The figurine will be carefully individually wrapped in bubble wrap and tissue, then packed in a sturdy double-walled box with additional padding. Tracked and insured postage strongly recommended. Please contact me for international shipping enquiries before purchasing.
