About The Record:
Broadway's Million Dollar Melodies, a two-LP gatefold album released in the mid-1960s by the Longines Symphonette Society (catalog LWS 174, LWS 175), features orchestral and choral renditions by The Longines Symphonette under Michel Piastro and The Singing Choraliers, covering 20 iconic songs from nine Broadway musicals, including West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Hello, Dolly!, The Sound of Music, Funny Girl, Fiddler on the Roof, Camelot, Oliver!, and Baker Street. As part of Longines' Living Music Program, this album reflects the 1960s mail-order record club model, delivering high-fidelity stereo recordings directly to consumers, capturing the era's fascination with Broadway's golden age through lush, accessible arrangements. Notable hit singles include Maria and Tonight from West Side Story, People from Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly! from Hello, Dolly!, I Could Have Danced All Night and On the Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady, and My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music, all of which achieved significant popularity in their original or covered forms. The album's liner notes, featuring production photos and promotional ads, enhance its historical value as a cultural artifact of Broadway's mid-20th-century prominence.
