VERY RARE Heirloom Organic Strawberry Watermelon Seeds (5)
Citrullus lanatus
Rare Organic Heirloom Strawberry Watermelon Seeds. Dark Green Rind and white seeds. Oblong Striped fruit reaches 15-25 pounds.85 days. [Selected from a FL heirloom by Walt Childs, introduced 1989 by SESE.] Strawberry-red flesh ripens to within in. of the rind. Delicate texture and outstanding flavor, one of the best we offer. Long melons (8 x 20 in.), 15-25 lbs, dark green rind with darker green stripes, white seeds. Very good disease resistance. 85 days. Flesh is a beautiful strawberry pink, ripening to within a half-inch of the rind, and usually has very few seeds. Fine grained, distinctively flavored and super sweet; it is classed among the best-tasting by those who have tried it. The oblong, striped fruit reaches 15-20 pounds. With fairly good disease resistance, this variety deserves to be the star of your summer garden. Originally selected from a Florida heirloom by Walt Childs and introduced in 1989 by our good friends at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Outstanding!
HOW TO GROW WATERMELON
Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost, plant out 2 weeks after last frost. Direct seed every 18” when soil is 70?F. Store at 45?F. Optimal temperature for plant growth is between 80-95?F with nighttime temperatures above 70?F. Water transplants more early on, sparingly as plants mature. Mulch to prevent weed competition. One beehive is suggested per acre for seedless varieties. The most commonly used signs of fruit maturity is to check if the tendril bearing the fruit has dried and withered or if the ground spot has turned a warm yellowish cream color. A number of seed growers give watermelon seed a 1 to 2 day fermentation period which helps free the seed from all endocarp material. Soil pH 6.5-7.5. Hardiness zones 4-9. Annual.
Days from maturity calculated from the date of seeding. Average 625–875 seeds per ounce. Average 15M seeds per acre. Federal germination standard: 70%. Usual seed life: 6 years. Isolation distance for seed saving: 1/2 mile.
