Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt commenced their collaboration writing musical comedies while students at the University of Texas. Their New York careers were launched writing material for the famed Julius Monk Upstairs-Downstairs Revues and Ben Bagley's "Shoestring Revues" during the late 1950's. The true turning point came in May, 1960 when Lore Noto produced their now almost legendary musical THE FANTASTICKS at the Sullivan Street Playhouse. Still playing, after fifteen years, and likely to continue indefinitely, THE FANTASTICKS is the longest-running musical production to ever play on or off Broadway. Next came a musical adaptation of N. Richard Nash's play "The Rainmaker," their first Broadway show, entitled 110 IN THE SHADE and boasting a glorious score which was especially singled out by the critics. Their next opus was a two-character musical starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston called I DO! I DO! A great success on Broadway and on the road, it has recently been an audience favorite in a summer touring production starring Carol Burnett and Rock Hudson. Seeking to expand the scope of the Broadway musical, the team's next effort was the innovative CELEBRATION (1969). Although not a financial success on Broadway, the musical is a true delight and has become highly popular in schools, colleges, and summer stock. Based on "Earthly Paradise," the collection of Colette's autobiographical writings by Robert Phelps, Jones & Schmidt then contributed incidental music for a 1970 off-Broadway production starring Zoe Caldwell and Mildred Dunnock called COLETTE. The next important step for Tom and Harvey was the establishment of Portfolio Productions, their own theatre workshop where they could write, experiment, and produce future shows. Portfolio has taken up most of their time in the last five years and in the Spring of 1975 they opened the workshop to the public for the first time with a special series of musicals. The first, a warm and witty revue performed by Tom and Harvey featuring songs and material from their past shows, followed by an updated version of CELEBRATION, and then two new musicals —PHILEMON and THE BONE ROOM. PHILEMON proved so successful it was extended for an additional six week run and has been recorded with its original cast on Gallery Records. There can be little doubt that the combined talents of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt will continue as a major and excitingly creative force in the musical theatre for many more years to come.
