The tumultous and tragic life of singing great Billie "Lady Day" Holiday is portrayed with amazing clarity and style by Diana Ross, a singing sensation in her own right. This film biography seems light on facts and heavy on drama, but it's high-level entertainment nevertheless, thanks to Ross' grasp of the role.

She croons the songs in a convincing style, and her acting is impressive, too. Billy Dee Williams plays her husband. Also with Richard Pryor and Sid Melton. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actress for Miss Ross in her stunning film debut.
