Swiss Chard 'Lucullus' is a particularly prolific variety which produces wonderful, heavily crumpled green leaves with white mid-rib and veins. The Lucullus Swiss chard produces light green leaves that are relatively small. The plants have an upright growth, grow to a height of around 50cm (20in) and a spread of 40cm (16in) and have a delicious mild, sweet flavor. The white stems are deliciously succulent when cooked like asparagus, and served with butter. The large, tasty leaves make a flavorsome alternative to spinach, and if left to flower, the flower stalks can also be cooked and eaten like sprouting broccoli. The white forms of Swiss chard are recognized as being hardier than colored varieties. Lucullus is a particular heat and cold tolerant and very easy to grow, it gives a good source of greens for much of the growing season. It's low-maintenance throughout the season and produces a large harvest over a long period of time.
