While hollidaying on a remote island, the painter Borg (Max von Sydow) admits to his wife Alma (Liv Ullman) that he lives in terror of the dark and shows her his sketchbook which contains pictures of monstrous bird-men, and insect demons. Ullman secretly reads his diary and discovers that his former mistress, Veronica (Ingrid Thulin), is on the island too. While her jealousy and his neuroses increase, they attend a dinner at the nearby castle of Baron von Markens where they appear to be humiliated.

Von Sydow tries to shoot Ullman to relieve the pressure of her jealousy and return to the castle, now a labyrinth with his demonic hosts mocking and tormenting him as he attempts to make love to Thulin, who he discovers lying corpse like on a coffin stand.
