Arizona community college biology teacher Dr. Ira Kane (David Duchovny) discovers that a meteor sample contains rapidly mutating and evolving cells. They become various insects, flying dinosaurs, tall blue ape men, then a giant blob in the desert about to divide and multipy.

One of the best parts of the $80 million PG-13 comedy is when a dinosaur flies off with a mall shoplifter (a Winona Ryder joke?). General Woodman (Ted Levine) insists that Napalm is the answer and end of the world partying occurs in the streets. Kane is teamed with his black teacher friend Prof. Harry Block (Orlando Jones), the accident prone Dr. Allison Reed (Julianne Moore), and the grinning idiot Wayne (Sean William Scott from 'American Pie' & 'Dude, Where's My Car?').

The three male leads, excited to have new rifles, sing along to "Play that Funky Music White Boy." I like the song by Wild Cherry (from Steubenville, Ohio), but when did karaoke lip synching to old hits become movie entertainment? Kane had lost his job at the Pentagon because of failed anthrax experiments.

Parts, including having Dan Aykroyd as the Governor, are meant to remind us of director Ivan Reitman's 'Ghost Busters' movies. In those '80s hits Ernie Hudson mostly stood around in the background. Orlando Jones (known for those 7Up Yours commercials) is a victim of recurring colonoscopy humour. He suffers a painful probe while naked (now that's comedy!) then becomes a human enema inside the foul smelling blob monster.

Also with a pair of fat idiot students, who figure out how to kill the monster with lots of Head and Shoulders shampoo, Richard Moll, and an end of the world song. A comic look at a rag tag team that must stop an alien invasion from taking over the planet. Plays like a humurous episode of the X-Files right down to the characters. A lot of fun and good special FX.
