The surreal, often disjointed plot follows a group of Satanists holed out in rural America. While their powers have reached unprecedented heights wherein they can actually destroy their victims through the weather (thus the title), their leader, a reincarnating "minister of Satan" named Jonathan Corbis (Ernest Bornine), is not satisfied. He intends to deliver a number of souls (kept locked in a glass container) promised to Satan, inscribed by blood in a book which was taken from the cult 300 years ago and secreted away by a treacherous member.

The cult's terrorizing of the traitor's descendants, the Prestons (led by Ida Lupino & William Shatner), comes to a head when Lupino is converted into an eyeless minion of Satan and Shatner winds up dragged into the cult's chapel for unspeakable rituals.

Luckily, Shatner's younger brother, Tom (Skerritt that is), comes to the rescue after Tom's wife, Julie (Joan Prather), uses her convenient ESP abilities to hone in on the diabolical menace. Corbis's evil ultimately pays its price in the infamous, lengthy finale, which features most of the cult members reduced to mounds of slimy goo.
