The Basil Italian Large Leaf, ‘Ocimum basilicum’, is a sweet basil that is particularly good for pesto and is also excellent for fresh use. There is nothing like the smell of basil, it is the smell of summer.

There is no more useful herb. The Italian Large Leaf Basil has just that, a larger leaf than other basils.

It is a good all “around basil” and it has very few pests.

Italian Large Leaf Basil can be used in most Italian foods such as pesto and pasta sauces.

Fresh Italian Large Leaf Basil makes a nice tea, an excellent vinegar, and tastes great fresh with fish, poultry, rice, mild vegetables, eggplant and many others.Basil requires at least 1 inch of water per week. Start seed indoors in a sunny location 2 weeks prior to warm weather. Seed can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm. Transplant outdoors in full sun when seedlings display 4-6 leaves and weather is warm.

We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family's feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest.

In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year. We would like the opportunity to share some of these seeds with you.
