Vintage original 27x41 in. US one-sheet poster from the classic 1970's drama/romance, THE GREAT GATSBY, released in 1974 by Paramount Pictures and directed by Jack Clayton. Based upon the famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston), a young Midwesterner now living on Long
Island, finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of
his neighbor, the nouveau riche Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford). He is drawn into Gatsby's circle,
becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy.
The image features a beautiful Art Deco-themed design depicting a close shot of Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow) and Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford) wearing period attire. Unrestored and folded as originally issued, this vintage original one-sheet poster is in very fine condition without any pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws.
Mia Farrow was pregnant during filming, so director
Jack Clayton did a lot of close-up shots and put her in a lot of flowing
costumes. Truman Capote was the original
screenwriter. In his draft, Nick was a homosexual and Jordan Baker a vindictive
lesbian. When Capote was fired, Francis Ford Coppola finished his draft in
three weeks. Robert Towne refused a chance to write
the screenplay despite a $175,000 salary, saying "I didn't want to be the
unknown Hollywood screenwriter who f*cked up a literary classic." Instead,
he wrote Chinatown (1974),
which earned him an Academy Award and established him as one of the greatest
screenwriters of the period.
