The Banco de Portugal issued Portuguese Escudo banknotes including this 50 Portuguese Escudos banknote. The Banco de Portugal started issuing these 50 Portuguese Escudo banknotes in 1964. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1968.

The front side has the portrait of a crowned Queen Isabella. The reverse side features an aerial view of the old town of Conimbriga, which grew out of a Roman settlement.
