COVER: THE SUMMIT: WHAT NEXT?

TOP OF THE WEEK:
WHAT NEXT? After two weeks, Jimmy Carter, Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat were finally ready to leave their mountaintop, and the conclusion of the Camp David summit was as extraordinary as its beginning. From London, Arnaud de Borchgrave sent a story on the man who wasn't there -- King Hussein of Jordan. (Cover photo by Susan T. McElhinncy -- Newsweek.).

THE DIAMOND BOOM: They symbolize love, arouse greed and remain impervious to war and monetary collapse. In an unsettled world, diamonds may he the ideal asset--and these days sales are booming. With prices soaring, speculation in the gems is frenzied, bringing chaos to an orderly industry and attracting a new breed of merchant, many of whom are less than scrupulous.

BLOODY NICARAGUA: Nicaragua was convulsed by civil war, and President Anastasio Somoza seemed ready to destroy his country to save it--for himself. To crush an army of street fighters (above), Somoza used the lull force of his military arsenal. Seven months after squandering his title to Leon Spinks because of lackadaisical training, Muhammad Ali showed that he can still temper his body and harden his mind. Before 70,000 in the New Orleans Superdome, the 36-year-old legend gave Spinks a boxing lesson and became tlst first man to win the heavyweight championship three times. Peter Bonventre was on scene, and Pete Axthelm wrote the story of what could--and probably should--be the champion's last hurrah.

DETROIT'S HIGH HOPES FOR '79: Here come the 1979s--and with them a staggering array of prospects and problems for Detroit. The automakers expect big things from some new nameplates and snazzy restyling, like the new Ford Mustang (below). But they Iae stiff regulation--and some fear that the economy could run out of gas before the sales effort shifts into high gear.
