COVER: The Pressure Builds. McFarlane's Suicide Attempt. The NSC's computer Secrets. Turmoil in the White House. Cover Photo by John Ficara-NEWSWEEK.

TOP OF THE WEEK [Major Top Stories]:
THE PRESSURE BUILDS: The attempted suicide last week by former national-security adviser Robert McFarlane dramatized the mounting pressures of the Iran-contra scandal. McFarlane's personal tragedy deepened the gloom in a White House beset by revelations-from a secret NSC computer-that the scandal may run deeper than originally thought. National Affairs: Page 18.

GAY CLERGY: The subject is one that Protestant and Roman Catholic leaders would rather confine to the ecclesiastical closet. But a handful of AIDS cases among clergy and pressure from defiant clerics are forcing churches to come to terms with homosexuals in their ranks. The Vatican is disciplining dissenters like Jesuit John McNeill who publicly denounce its teachings; most gay priests, meanwhile, live in fear of being discovered. Society: Page 58.

MORE ARRESTS ON WALL STREET: The ever-widening insider-trading investigation netted another big fish last week: takeover specialist Martin Siegel. Federal agents also arrested three other Wall Street executives, leaving the securities industry wondering who would fall next. Business: Page 48.

SPECIAL CLASS: Most parents naturally hope that Little Johnny-or Little Mary-turns into another Einstein. But bright children often need special attention. Should parents send their kids to special schools or keep them in their regular classes? In recent years parents, educators and politicians have entered the debate over the best way to teach gifted kids. Lifestyle: Page 82.
