Sundance is a limited edition print by Chuck Dehaan. Published by Guildhall in 1991. Edition of 925 signed and numbered prints.
Chuck Dehaan's story about this print: "With the big cow outfits of the West, a very special pride abides in the quality of stock they raise. With cattle being the main livelihood of these spreads, a lot of attention is given to selective breeding. They are always trying to improve their product.
But, behind the scenes, so to speak...and unaware to most non-ranch folks, there's a very deep pride within the owners and the men who work on these ranches. This pride is shown in the quality of the remuda. A remuda is the string of saddle horses used by the cowhands to work cattle. The reputation of the horses a ranch owns has always been a strong point with cowboys and their signing on with an outfit. These remudas are typically made up of all geldings - no stallions, no mares - contrary to the Hollywood image.
Here in this painting of Sundance, I have portrayed a remuda of good quality ranch geldings watering out. Their Quarter Horse quality, which is the most popular breed for cowhorses, shows in their appearance. Color is not a factor determining quality. How they savvy a cow and their stamina is the main point. The horse in the foreground is a dun color. You can tell he is a favorite on the ranch because he shows a lot of Quarterhorse blood."
About the Artist: Chuck's art prints are noted for their exceptional portrayals of the West, its unique beauty and history, and the proud spirit of its people. His approach to painting is a natural outgrowth of his own experiences. As an accomplished rodeo rider, rancher, and cutting horse trainer, this multifaceted man has successfully intertwined the threads of art and ranching throughout much of his adult life. Following an unswerving dedication to excellence, Chuck has achieved a well-deserved reputation for artistic skill among his contemporaries in the arts, as well as with the many collectors who own his posters, prints and paintings.
Chuck works in the style of the old masters, beginning with a meticulous under painting followed by the gradual buildup of glazes to produce a shimmering depth of tonality and color. The results of this laborious process are evident in the remarkable light and beauty of his authentic western scenes in all of his art, prints and posters.
He received the prestigious Golden Spur Award for cover art by the Western Writers of America. His art, prints and posters have been featured at the Paint Horse Association Convention in Midland, Texas.
