FYI
Rudi Reichardt, a self taught artist was born in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1929.
As far back as Rudi can remember he loved drawing and painting. It was the rugged stormy
landscape of the Black Forest, exposure to the great European Masters, but most of all, the
music of the Baroque shaped his work and life. In 1946, at age 17, Rudi began his professional
work painting backdrops at the Opera House in Karlsruhe. Reichardt worked there until 1951
when he immigrated to Canada, where he, for the next twelve years, worked as an interior
decorator during the day painting murals, paintings and furniture for clients homes. At
night, immersing himself in the classical music he loved so well, he would spend endless hours
painting the quickly vanishing countryside of Southern Ontario.
Reichardt had the first public showing of his work in Toronto, Ontario, in 1954. The big
transition to freelance painting came about, when in 1964, his paintings were personally
selected by Vincent Price, the well known actor and art connoisseur, for the Vincent Price Collection of Fine Art. This marked the turning point in this artist’s life and brought his work to the attention of the art world.
Since then, his career has mushroomed with countless one-man showings and also a
commission to do four consecutive annual calendars for the International Harvesters
of Canada.
Having painted the Canadian landscape, its birds and wildlife, from coast to coast,
Reichardt moved to Florida in 1978, where he spent six years painting seascapes, still-life
and the landscape, as well as the wildlife of that region.
In 1984, he relocated to Flagstaff and a year later, drawn by the power and special spiritual
quality he sensed in the Red Rocks, he moved to Sedona, where he is currently lives with his
wife Edith. They have two children, Stephen and Diana. Reichardt is now involved in
painting Northern Arizona and the Southwest.
Rudi Reichardt is published exclusively by Bentley House Fine Art Publisher of Walnut Creek,
