Verve's SILVER COLLECTION was the company's first reissue series, begun in the mid-'80s just as CDs were coming on the market. While the series was quickly superseded by other, more thorough and lavishly packaged reissues, this 19-track, 64-minute collection, focusing on Ella Fitzgerald's orchestral work from the mid-'50s, is still an outstanding compilation.
Opening with her trademark "Oh, Lady Be Good" and continuing on through standards like George and Ira Gershwin's "Nice Work if You Can Get It" and Johnny Mercer's "Laura," the song selection holds few surprises. However, the performances and material are so uniformly excellent--this rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is the benchmark against which all others must be measured--that the familiarity makes the album feel like an old friend. A magnificent introduction for novices and a fine sampler for fans.
