Reproduction Solid Bronze statue of Goddess ( Minerva ) Athena holding owl from Met.

Solid Cast Bronze statue . Chemically oxidized (patina) as the original shown in Museums.

Owls of a type that can still be seen flitting about the Akropolis of Athens were associated with Athena, whose sanctuary was on top of that high rocky plateau. For centuries, the principle coinage of Athens showed the head of Athena on one side and an owl on the other. Here the goddess stands relaxed, ready to let the bird fly.

=====Also spelled Athene in Greek religion. She is the city protectress, goddess of wisdom, war, handicraft, and practical reason, identified by the Romans with Minerva. She was essentially urban and civilized, the antithesis in many respects of Artemis, goddess of the outdoors. Athena was probably a pre-Hellenic goddess and was later taken over by the Greeks. Yet the Greek economy, unlike that of the Minoans, was largely military, so that Athena, while retaining her earlier domestic functions, became a goddess of war.======
