Mary Poppins Comes Back by P. L. Travers New York Reynald & Hitchcock, 1943 Hardback book in dust jacket (not price-clipped) Green cloth stamped in black. 268 pages. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrations in black and white by Mary Shepard. Front board water stained upper right top and board edge. Fraying to bottom edge of spine, water stained upper left top and board edge to rear board. Water staining to lower right corner of rear board and severe abrasion to about two inches of the board edge and extending slightly into lower right board edge; and a bit of water staining to left corner with one half inch of abrasion to edge of lower left rear. (Please view the photos.) Interior pages are very good. Book plate of former owner affixed to front fixed endpaper. Neat 1944 Christmas inscription in pen on the half title page. Indicated Seventh Printing, September, 1943. (The first issue of this book was printed in 1935.) This is the second Mary Poppins book the series. This a Reynald & Hitchcock printing - the same as the first US issue. The endpapers are not cracked. The book is square and not bowed or warped. Overall this book has weirdly crisp boards and spine but not fine with the water stains. It is considered good, but still attractive. The dust jacket is good with a two and one-half by one and one-half piece missing from the lower right back panel. A smaller chip is at the lower left corner. A bit of moderate chipping at the spine ends and lower corners of the front jacket panel. There is a closed tear on the front jacket panel extending from the upper right corner to the top of the illustration of Mary Poppins right shoulder. The dust jacket is enclosed in a removable Mylar jacket protector. First US edition, seventh printing. Overall a good copy in a fair to good dust jacket.
