Kente weaving originated from Bonwire, a kente clothing weaving village in Ejisu-Juaben Municipal district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. In the past, Asante Kente cloth was worn primarily by kings and high-ranking chiefs, but overtime, the use of kente became widespread and now worn by any person. Due to its significance, it has been adopted by people in Ivory Coast and many other West African countries.

It is the best known of all African textiles. The names of the cloth are derived from several sources including important historical events, proverbs, important chiefs, queen mothers and plants.
