Antique single full-page halftone print titled "The Duke of Monmouth and James H." by Scottish artist John Pettie (1839-1893) from the original folio publication by D. Appleton and Co. of the 1893-94 World's Fair in Chicago -- Limited Edition of 1,000 copies, "The Art of the World, Illustrated in Printings, Statuary, and Architecture of the World's Columbian Exposition" featuring scenes of the fair and commissioned works of art. A portrait of the artist and descriptive text of this artwork is printed on the reverse side. Publisher D. Appleton states the selection of prints within the folio "presents the highest achievement of modern art, reproduced by unequaled processes." The full page measures approximately 12.5 x 16.5. The desired framing area will be smaller. Shipped very loosely rolled to safeguard print and prohibit creasing. Folio Text: James, Duke of Monmouth, the natural son of Charles II, King of England, banished to Holland for having conspired against the Duke of York, on the accession of the latter to his fathers throne, under the title of James II, returns from exile to take up arms against him. Defeated at Sedgmoor by Lord Churchill, he is dragged to London, bound hand and foot. King James is alone facing his defeated enemy, who is at his feet suing for pardon. The king remained inflexible and caused him to be beheaded (July 15, 1686). Artist Biography: John Pettie RA was a Scottish painter who spent most of his career in England. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1866 and a full academician in 1874. As an enthusiastic amateur musician, he helped the career of the young composer Hamish MacCunn by organizing concerts for him in his own studio.
