What are Elder Futhark Runes?:
The Elder Futhark is the oldest of the Germanic/Nordic runic systems, dating back to at least the very first centuries of the Common Era. The Elder Futhark is an ancient system utilizing 24 symbols, called runes, that each represent an aspect of the magickal, Universal forces. Each rune has different meanings depending on which direction the rune faces; an upside down rune has a different meaning than a rune that is upright, for example.
It was said the Allfather, the god Odin, retrieved the runes by sacrificing himself to himself, by hanging nine days and nine nights from the highest branches of the shamanic World Tree, Yggdrasil, while pierced by his own spear. During this time, no one clothed him, fed him, or gave him drink. At the end of this ordeal, Odin fell down, into the gaping void below him, where he at last saw the runes, and retrieved them for use. He imparted the knowledge he retrieved unto not just the gods and other beings, but also to humanity, that we may use them for our benefit.
It is for this reason that every would-be runemaster must undergo an extensive initiation into the system, working through the energies of each individual rune, before they may truly call themselves master of the runes. Often lasting at least several years, this shamanic initiation requires that the initiate undergoes trials and ordeals, as well as positive experiences, that teach the initiate about the energies encompassed by the each individual rune.
