School Days at St. Bede's is a classic in the genre of girls' school stories, the most popular form of reading for British girls from the late nineteenth century on, when secondary education had just become available for them. Written in 1898, this book is one of many the many selections Geraldine Mockler (1868-1967) contributed as a prolific author in this style of children's books. Set in a girls' school, the story is about their feelings, interests, language and values; a veritable snapshot of society at the time, when the emergent schoolgirl image, complete with the "gym tunic" or uniform, became the definition of their identity, giving them new and distinctive status. Not only did this genre appeal to girls from the middle-class, it also was popular among those from lower-middle-class, working-class and home-schooled backgrounds. The theme of this style generally encouraged girls to accept family responsibility and learn domestic skills in addition to becoming educated, self-supporting and responsible women in the future. The underlying message, in this form of light reading, was that one could have it all: be a true woman, an accomplished wife and a loving parent without giving up ambition, success, and independence. Over 100 years later, these goals are ones that women still struggle with today.
