How to Plant a Cherry Blossom
The breathtaking spring flowers of the cherry blossom tree attract the eyes of thousands throughout the world, inspiring festivals, parades, poetry and magnificent artwork.
Instructions
1.Find a location for your cherry blossom tree. Choose a place with fertile soil, plenty of sunlight and good drainage. Pick a spot that is higher and more sloped than the surrounding area (south- or southwest-facing slopes are best), which will prevent frosty air from settling on the plant. This is necessary because this plant blooms in early spring. Make sure there is at least 20 feet of open space around the chosen site for the cherry blossom tree.
2.Buy a seedling or young cherry blossom tree from a local nursery, which will ensure that it will grow well in your area.
3.Plant the seedling or young tree in the spring, which is ideal for areas with cold winters. Planting in fall is acceptable if you live in a location with mild winters.
4.Prepare the soil by using a spade or shovel to dig a hole that is approximately a size and a half larger than the base of the plant you have purchased. Make sure the hole is at a depth that will allow the roots to be completely covered but the trunk to still be exposed. In locations with thick clay soils or heavy loams, create a raised bed before digging the hole, as a hole into this compact type of soil will act as a water-tight container, causing root rot.
5.Remove the tree from its pot or burlap sack. Gently loosen the roots and trim off damaged roots. Carefully spread the roots in the hole, keeping the plant upright. Add some soil to the roots, enough to hold the tree upright, and firm the soil by gently patting it with your hands. Give the plant some water to settle the roots into the dirt. Add remaining soil to the hole, and water it again to help remove pockets of air from the soil around the root system.
6.Water the tree regularly during the first year to achieve proper root development. Make sure this water drains, and does not swamp the roots. After the first year, continue to water the tree as you would other fruit or ornamental flowering trees, or more if you live in a characteristically dry region, or a region with dry summers.
Apply organic mulch around the base of the tree to help prevent the soil from drying out and to keep weed growth under control.
Apply compound mineral fertilizers once a year--check with your local nursery to find out what pH level is best. Generally, cherry blossom trees can tolerate a variety of pH
