Satsuma Pottery, from the Satsuma Province in Japan, in a traditional style.

Initially, Satsuma's finely crackled glaze was the invention of Korean potters living in Satsuma Province.  The glaze, although smooth and a creamy white color, was filled with tiny cracks, that reflected light.  The crackling was thought to make the piece glow when light was shown upon it.  This small vase was probably made around 1907.  It has traditional colorful geometric diapers over the neck and down the sides, while the main paintings show a scholar reading a scroll, against a diapered ground.

This vase features the glaze that became more popular in late Meiji period, with a fine crackle, but not as finely crackled as some Meiji period (or even rather recent period) pieces.  It is relatively small in size, measuring 2 1/2 inches in diameter, and approximately 3 3/4  inches high.
