This beautiful dark green fern has deeply cut fronds that are strong and stands tall above the underground rhizome from which this fern spreads.  She can reach heights of 3 feet tall (though 2 feet is more common) with a spread of 3 feet on average. 

 

Leather leaf is evergreen in zones 8 through 11 and will return from the rhizomes each year in zone 7.

 

 

Light requirements are shade to part sun with moisture requirements considered medium with weekly watering needs.  Mine are growing under my water hungry Live Oaks without irrigation and are doing very well with just rain to meet their watering needs.

 

 

If you think that this fern looks familiar, you will recognize her as many florist use this fern in their arraignments – and you can too!  Uses are borders, mass planting as ground cover, filler in landscaped beds, woodland gardens and containers.  This fern is deer resistant and will accept the salt from a coastal exposure setting.

 

 

You will receive a 1 gallon plant with at least 2 fronds, most with more than 2 fronds, that has a strong, well developed rhizome.  She will have her pot and possibly some of her soil removed to save you on shipping charges.
