My, how times have changed. When I was 4 years old I was hospitalized in a children's hospital for a week. I was running a low grade fever and no one could figure out what was wrong with me. I absolutely hated that hospital----parents were only allowed to visit their child for an hour or two on Sunday afternoons. Thankfully, now children's hospitals allow the parents to visit their children much more frequently and for longer periods of time.
Here for your consideration is the highly coveted Playmobil #4404 Children's Hospital play set. Manufactured between 2007-2012, this set won an unprecedented number of prestigious awards including: Parent's Magazine 2007 Toy Award, The Oppenheimer Gold Award, Dr. Toy Award, Teacher's Choice Award, Scholastic Greatest Toy Award etc. While Playmobil is still offering some "add-on" hospital-related play sets, they retired the #4404 Hospital in 2012. This offering is approximately 99.9% complete.
This is an incredibly detailed and massive play set (e.g. 29.5" L x 19.6" W x 15.7" H). Designed for children ages 4 years old and up, the figures and accessories are all proportioned to their real-life counterparts. The Hospital includes an operating room, equipped with an operating light, a heart monitoring machine, an oxygen canister with an oxygen mask, an IV pole, bag, and cuff, and a mobile ultrasound machine with an attached paddle. The operating bed is adjustable and the operating light may be moved or tilted to best "illuminate" the patient. The Hospital also features a reception area complete with an office phone, computer, notebooks, and office furniture. There is also a Child Life play area equipped with "board games," a engaging child-friendly rug, several chairs and a table, and a friendly clown and wagon. The children's examination area contains a scale and giraffe measuring stick. Patient care is provided in a nursery area and a self-contained private room. Many of the features included in the Hospital are child-powered. For example, the elevator may be moved up and down. The operating table, crib, and patient's bed are all adjustable. Staff members include a male and female physician and a couple of nurses. Moreover, a clown volunteers his time to cheer up the hospitalized children.
A myriad of accessories accompanies this offering: a table top phone and a cell phone, assorted lotions, baby bottles and a bottle warmer, a baby scale, office furniture, plants, and even a teddy bear. I would consider this offering to be approximately 99.9% complete. Missing items include: a cardboard "rug" and a name tag for the crib. Playmobil usually stocks replacement parts for a given set for up to 5 years after the set is retired. I have already checked with Playmobil regarding these items. The "rug" is no longer being produced. I do have a blank, white name tag plate that I will be inserting with this lot.
I have closely examined this base and all of its accessories. In my opinion, this set warrants an EXC+++-NEAR MINT rating. The only aberrations I can detect are:
1. Three scratches on one window pane out of a three window set; this particular window is pictured on the outside wall of the first floor adult patient's room; the scratches vary in size: 1 3/4" L x 1/8" W, 1" L x 1/8" W, 3/4" L x 1/16"W; there is also one scuff (e.g. 1/2" L x 1/8" W) on this same window;
2. One, thin, 3/4" L x 1/8" scratch on one of the top small windows; and
3. One, thin 1/2" L x 1/16" scratch on the top small window overlooking the operating room.
I'm being super "nit-picky" here. Most sellers would not even mention these "imperfections." I do not want anyone to be disappointed by their purchase from me. There are no marks, discolorations, cracks, breaks, or repairs on any of the Hospital base components or its accessories. Many of my former customers have indicated that their purchases from me far exceeded my descriptions. In my opinion, this set is in NEAR MINT-MINT condition. I've lowered my rating to EXC+++-NEAR MINT purely because of these minor scratches.
FYI, Playmobil toys are reknowned for their high quality, durability, attention to detail, and the extendibility of their underlying toy system. All figures are scaled to fit in a child's hand with add-on accessories (e.g. hats, skirts, aprons, collars, scarves, armor, headresses, shoes, sandals, stethoscope, jewelry etc.) lending authenticity to the different characters involved. The jointed figures are able to clasp items in their hands and move about through "child power." A wide assortment of vehicles, animals, furniture, and buildings are realistically scaled according to their "real-life" equivalents and to reflect actual life scenarios. Several of the animals have mouths that open and close and the elephants' trunks can pick up buckets by their handles etc..
All of Playmobil's play sets revolve around established "themes" familiar to young children (e.g. Medieval Castles and Knights, Pirates, Western Forts, Native Americans, Trains, Stage Coaches, Gold Mines, Circuses, Zoos, Victorian Mansions, Fairy Tale Castles, Sherwood Forest, Construction, Doctors and Dentists' Offices, Hospitals, Airports, Modern Homes etc.). Due to the level of detail, children's imaginations are afforded endless open-ended play opportunities. Not only do these toys broaden a child's imagination, creativity, attention, and use of elaborate oral narratives, they also facilitate a child's cooperative and dramatic play skills and fine motor capabilities. These toys conform to the highest production standards of quality and safety in accordance with European and American safety guidelines. The toys, while primarily manufactured in Germany, also are produced in Malta and Spain. They are distributed in more than 70 countries throughout the world.
I can vouch for the high quality and play value these toys afford. My own children played with a variety of these sets up until age 13! Talk about getting "your bang for the buck." Several of them were employed in school diorama projects. What a lifesaver! I also used them with my preschool and school aged clients for speech-language therapy. They'd be great for families that are home-schooling their children.
Due to the small, intricate parts, Playmobil recommends that these toys be reserved for children 4 years of age and up. Adult assistance will be required to help assemble this set. This offering includes the Hospital's original instructions along with its original two-sided poster.
I will be thoroughly Q-tip cleaning this base and all of its figures and accessories before shipping the set to its new owners. My sets are IMMACULATE!
